Hive O'Clock Happy Hour Art Workshops


End your day with art!

Hive O'Clock Happy Hour Art Workshops take place on the third Tuesday of each month from 5:30-7:00. Come shake off the workday at this casual, creative gathering - eat some food, make something cool, and be in good company.  

All workshops are $10 for nonmembers and $5 for members (covers workshop, materials, and appetizers) and meet at various local restaurants.

Artist Garden in Pawtuxet Village

This is a special Hive O'Clock. The cost is $15 and we ask that you sign up in advance here.

We're so excited to be collaborating with Lady Scouts this month! This jewelry workshop will be hosted in the bay-side garden of artist Amie Plante in Pawtuxet Village. Local designer Katy Westcott will be demonstrate different techniques for creating patterned bracelets.  

The $15 cost covers your supplies and refreshments. This is a special Hive O'Clock and we ask that you sign up in advance here. Thanks!    

About Lady Scouts: Lady Scouts is about channeling the spirit of adventure in all of us, challenging ourselves to go beyond the comfortable constructs of our daily routines, and cooperatively learning valuable life-skills through monthly events. Part social-network, part life-skills builder, part daily-routine-breaker, Lady Scouts is an inclusive group that welcomes any and every woman, as long as she is over 21.

Book Making with Shannon Casey

Shannon Casey will walk us though creating a glue bound book using recycled materials. Your cover can be a simple scrap of fabric or a complex collage or embellished with buttons and other findings. It could even be created with less conventional materials like fused plastic bags or paper pulp with pressed flowers. Once you make one journal you'll begin seeing everything as a potential book cover!

Take a break from winter's palette and create a frameable burst of color at our February Hive O'Clock Happy Hour workshop! With postcard-sized paper, ink, paint and markers, local artist Margaret Owen will lead a workshop on using color to create bold, energetic drawings that bring any page to life.  

No drawing experience necessary!  Margaret will guide you through creating expressive paintings using a variety of prompts and inspiring images.  Come relax, create, and learn the art of sketching with COLOR!

Jenn Dlugos and Kyle Cranston, the ladies behind the humor book Mug of Woe: Tales to Make You Realize Your Life is Awesome, will teach you the basics of humor essay writing, show you how to find your natural comic voice, and teach you how to make your funny personal stories relatable to your readers. Come with a funny personal story you want to work on or just follow one of the Mug of Woe ladies’ favorite humor writing prompts!

Come shake off the workday at this casual, creative gathering - eat some food, make something cool, and be in good company. Join us Tuesday, August 16th, at the Wild Colonial and make a gorgeous felt brooch with local jewelry maker Danielle Vaillancourt.

We will combine layers of colorful felt, sparkly beads, polished stones, wacky buttons, and glistening crystals to make these fantastic, wearable creations. Perfect for adding a bit of cheer and pop of color to a bag, cardigan, pea coat, headband- use your imagination!

When strung together and lit from within these tiny lanterns are sure to add the perfect bit of whimsy indoors or out. Make them for your next summer gathering, or just for fun.

Stephanie Obodda will lead us as we make modular origami stars out of magazines! These are great to hang in windows, on gifts, or as ornaments. In modular origami, individual folded pieces are assembled to make a larger shape. It's fun, easy, portable, and meditative.

Mini Zines with Alice Costas

Providence Athenaeum, 251 Benefit Street, Providence

Alice Costas will share the art of the zine, a small, self-published publication of original or appropriated texts and images. We'll be making mini-zines inspired by poems in the Athenaeum's collection.  Using collage, scissors, and a simple fold participants will leave the event with their own handmade book, ready to be photocopied and mass-distributed, treasured as a personal mantra, or given as a one-of-a-kind gift.  End your day with art!

Moira Richardson of Literary Tease will show us how to make and trade artist trading cards. Artist Trading Cards are miniature works of art, 2.5 x 3.5 inches, that are often traded between artists. Whether you like to paint, draw, or collage, come make your own in your choice of media. We'll have paint, markers, collage materials, scissors, and glue to share, plus a huge stack of blank cards. Feel free to bring your own images or other supplies to add to the fun. Keep your cards for yourself or trade with your fellow artists; it's up to you!

Wrap around your neck to keep out the winter chilly air and be fashionable at the same time!  Necklaces will be made from past Indie Arts festival t-shirts or bring your own.
